Red Bull Theater: The Beast of Hungary
NYC’s Red Bull Theater, which revitalizes undersung classics, presented an in-person reading of Lope de Vega’s The Beast of Hungary earlier this week and you can watch a recording through Sunday. A Hispanic Golden Age classic, this proto-feminist comedy is about a queen banished to the wilderness by her usurper sister. As revenge, the queen kidnaps her niece and raises her as a feral creature who yearns for love. This exploration of female sexuality and social mores was wildly ahead of its time.

National Theatre at Home: Andrew Scott in Vanya
In 2020, London’s lauded National Theatre launched its own streaming service featuring professional stage captures of its productions. While you can buy a subscription, shows are also available to rent individually. New to the roster is Andrew Scott’s one-man Vanya, in which the Ripley star plays all the diverse characters in Chekhov’s landmark play about loneliness, longing and unrequited love. Recorded live on stage in London last year, the production was polarizing but Scott received unanimous praise for his tour-de-force performance, earning rave reviews and an Olivier nomination. A 72-hour rental costs $12 and captions are available. It’s just one of many fantastic National Theatre shows you can stream, so be sure to browse the entire list.
