Even though in-person theatre and dance are back in full swing, in the name of accessibility we’re continuing to round up performances to watch online from the comfort of home. Our curated list spotlights the five best options to stream this weekend, Friday, July 25 to Sunday, July 27, for free or at low cost.

Live from 54 Below: Patti Murin: Here I Go Again

Live-streaming Saturday, July 26 at 7 p.m. ET for $29

The Wilma Theater: A Summer Day

Philadelphia’s Wilma Theater recently presented an acclaimed mounting of Jon Fosse’s A Summer Day and you can watch a recording online courtesy of The League of Live Stream Theater. Although Fosse is one of Norway’s leading playwrights, his work is rarely presented in the US. This haunting and poetic drama centers on a mature woman whose life seemingly stopped when her husband disappeared at sea. A powerful meditation on loss and grief.

Live from 54 Below: Friends of Dorothy: A Benefit for the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus

Live-streaming Sunday, July 27 at 9:45 p.m. ET for $29

National Theatre at Home: Ballet Shoes

In 2020, London’s lauded National Theatre launched its own streaming service featuring professional stage captures of its productions. While you can buy a subscription, shows are also available to rent individually. New to the roster is the heartwarming family musical Ballet Shoes, based on Noel Streatfeild’s charming children’s novel about three adopted sisters with different passions trying to find their way in life. A 72-hour rental costs $10 and captions are available. It’s just one of many fantastic National Theatre shows you can stream, so be sure to browse the entire list.

The Gospel at Colonus

If you’re not able to catch the current mounting of The Gospel at Colonus on Little Island, you can watch a recording of the lauded 1985 production at Philadelphia’s American Musical Theatre Festival. Director Lee Breuer and composer Bob Telson’s spirited, all-Black riff on Sophocles’ tragedy Oedipus at Colonus stars Morgan Freeman as The Messenger, Carl Lumbly as Theseus and Robert Earl Jones (James’ dad!) as Creon.
