Even though in-person theatre and dance are back in full swing, in the name of accessibility we’re continuing to round up performances to watch online from the comfort of home. Our curated list spotlights the five best options to stream this weekend, Friday, April 25 to Sunday, April 27, for free or at low cost.

Live From 54 Below: Sondheim Unplugged

Live-streaming on Sunday, April 27 at 7 p.m. ET for $29.

Playwrights’ Center: The Violet Sisters

Minneapolis’ well-regarded Playwrights’ Center recently presented an in-person reading of

The Violet Sisters

and you can watch a recording at home this week. Written by award-winning playwright and

TDF teaching artist Gina Femia

, the two-hander centers on a pair of estranged sisters who reconnect in the wake of their father’s death to confront their troubled past.

PBS Great Performances: Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch

As we gear up for awards season, you can catch Kara Young’s hilarious 2024 Tony Award-winning performance in Purlie. Directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon and subtitled “A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch,” Ossie Davis’ 1961 satire about racism centers on a Black preacher (Hamilton Tony winner Leslie Odom, Jr.) who returns to his rural Georgia home hell-bent on winning back his church and freeing his people from an exploitative overseer (Jay O. Sanders). Witty, wise and timelier than ever.

MCC Theater: Miscast25

For 25 years, MCC Theater has hosted Miscast, a buzzy gala featuring stage stars performing numbers from roles they would never play. In years past, videos of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Raúl Esparza singing “A Boy Like That” from West Side Story and Tina Fey and Tituss Burgess one-upping each other in “You’re Nothing Without Me” from City of Angels have gone viral. While the in-person event took place earlier this month at Hammerstein Ballroom, you can watch a recording of the concert online for FREE. This year’s stellar lineup includes Nick Jonas crooning “Still Hurting” from

The Last Five Years, Cole Escola channeling the entire ensemble ofThe Music Man with “Iowa Stubborn,” spouses Steven Pasquale and Phillipa Soo singing the Merrily-Rentmash-up “Not a Day Goes By/Without You,” Aaron Tveit performing “I Know Him So Well” from Chess, Adam Pascal belting out “Memory” from Cats, Death Becomes Her frenemies Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard doing “The Confrontation” from Les Misérables, Nicole Scherzinger delivering the anthem “I Am What I Am” from La Cage aux Folles and Raúl Esparza hitting high notes on Wicked’s “Defying Gravity.” A surprise-filled must-see for musical lovers!
