Even though in-person theatre and dance are back in full swing, in the name of accessibility we’re continuing to round up performances to watch online from the comfort of home. Our curated list spotlights the ten best options to stream through the end of the month, Friday, September 19 to Tuesday, September 30, for free or at low cost.

National Theatre at Home: Nye Starring Michael Sheen

In 2020, London’s lauded National Theatre launched its own streaming service featuring professional stage captures of its productions. While you can buy a subscription, shows are also available to rent individually. New to the roster is Nye, Tim Price’s surreal celebration of Aneurin “Nye” Bevan, the Labour Party politician who spearheaded the founding of the National Health Service in the UK. Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon, The Queen, Good Omens) plays the title health care hero, an acclaimed performance that was filmed live onstage in 2024. Rufus Norris directs. National Theatre at Home: A Streetcar Named Desire

Directed by Benedict Andrews and recorded onstage in 2014, this radical reinvention of Tennessee Williams’ classic features a slowly rotating set, fiery emotions and some truly brutal moments. Live-streaming on Friday, September 26 at 8 p.m. for $15.

Currently running at La MaMa, this acclaimed mounting of Family will be live-streamed to at-home audiences for this one performance. Penned by Celine Song, who earned an Oscar nomination for her screenplay for Past Lives, the play centers on three haunted half-siblings who reunite in the wake of their father’s death. A highly unconventional and darkly comic look at the horrors of being related by blood. Presented by the Obie-winning company Hoi Polloi.

PBS Great Performances: Rodgers & Hammerstein’s 80th Anniversary

Oh, what a beautiful evenin’! Stream this glorious, one-night-only tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein, which was recorded live onstage at London’s Theatre Royal Drury in 2023 and features stars from both sides of the pond. The lineup includes six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, Moulin Rouge!
