Ursula Eagly: Dream Body Body Building

In Ursula Eagly’s new work, which was devised in collaboration with her dancers, the performers navigate a dreamscape that straddles the line between sleep and consciousness. Bucharest-based artist Lala Misosniky provides the trippy soundscape.

Pontus Lidberg: On the Nature of Rabbits

Multifaceted Swedish choreographer Pontus Lidberg evokes the peak of the AIDS epidemic in On the Nature of Rabbits, an evening-length piece inspired by the true story of a young dancer from former East Germany moving to Paris in 1993. Through dreamlike action, enhanced by projections by Emmy-winning animator Jason Carpenter, Lidberg explores reality versus imagination during a time of fear.

Flamenco Festival

For more than two decades, the Flamenco Festival has presented premier practitioners of the rhythmic dance style at venues across the city. But the centerpiece is always the two-week extravaganza at New York City Center. This year’s edition opens with National Ballet of Spain’s 38 dancers in Invocación, celebrating the evolution of Spanish dance. Next up is Olga Pericet’s sensual solo La Leona. The Gala Flamenca, featuring dancers Manuel Liñán, Alfonso Losa, El Yiyo and Paula Comitre accompanied by vocalist Sandra Carrasco, rounds out the fest.

After recovering from a stroke, choreographer Zvi Gotheiner returns to action with the world premiere of The Field. A collaboration among Gotheiner, composer Scott Killian, lighting designer Mark London and seven dancers, the work examines a fertile space and those who seek to possess it.

World-renowned choreographer Shen Wei brings Dongpo: Life in Poems, his latest fusion of Chinese culture and contemporary dance to Lincoln Center. Inspired by the life and times of acclaimed Chinese poet Su Dongpo (1037-1101), this combination of movement, music and audiovisual elements is performed by the China Oriental Performing Arts Group and features live guqin accompaniment.

Doug Varone: To My Arms/Restore

Doug Varone juxtaposes a pair of powerful works in this two-part evening. Set to arias by G. F. Handel, To My Arms is an intimate exploration of love and loss, while Restore, danced to Nico Bentley’s Handel Remixed, centers community, defiance and resilience in the face of widespread danger. MasterVoices and the New York Baroque Incorporated provide live accompaniment.

Trisha Brown helped shape the contemporary dance scene. Seven years after her death, her eponymous troupe continues to break new ground with In the Fall, a fresh work by French choreographer Noé Soulier, performed alongside a pair of classics by Brown: Glacial Decoy (1979) and Working Title (1985), incredible feats of athleticism and stamina.
